Kolkata: The body of a hawker-turned-moneylender was found in an attic on the terrace of the alleged murderer's house on Monday morning in Sukchar, Sodepur. Cops suspect the accused, Chirag Guha alias Sayan, a man in his early 30s, strangled and later bludgeoned the victim, Akram Ali (46), after he demanded repayment of Rs 2,500, which the accused borrowed from him.
Within hours of the recovery of Ali's decomposed body, Sayan was arrested, while his mother went into hiding. "Prima facie, it appears that he was first strangled with a wire around his face and neck. Later, he was bludgeoned to death with a blunt weapon, after which the accused hid the body in an attic on the terrace of his house on Sunday. As a foul smell began emanating from the house, neighbours informed the Khardah police station," said a senior officer of the Barrackpore Commissionerate.
Locals said that Ali, who sold scrap metal, knew Sayan. "Around 10:30 am on Sunday, I heard cries of help from the house. When I asked Sayan's mother what had happened, she claimed that her son was bitten by a dog. So, we did not probe further," said Shrabani Das, a neighbour.
The police have also launched a manhunt for Sayan's mother, who remains at large.
