Kolkata: Two sisters headed to a wedding ceremony in a scooter were hit by a speeding SUV on Kalyani Expressway near Khardah on Sunday night. The elder sister, Sampriti Ghosh (21), a BA third-year student, died on the spot. Her younger sister, Smriti, who was riding pillion, sustained critical injuries and is currently battling for her life at RG Kar hospital.
A relative of the sisters said: "The siblings were very excited about the weddingin Naihati. It is unfortunate they are paying the price for someone else's recklessness."
According to witnesses, the SUV was moving at a high speed when it rammed the scooter from behind near the Mathurapur crossing. "The SUV, carrying around seven to eight passengers and heading towards Naihati, was speeding dangerously. The impact threw both sisters nearly 15 to 20 feet away," said Sandipan Basak, a local trader. The SUV fled the scene immediately after the accident. Police are yet to make any arrest.
