  • Kolkata: Some miscreants allegedly created a fake email ID of the NRS Medical College principal, Pitbaran Chakraborty, and appealed for money from several doctors of the medical college. Sources said the cybercrime cell of the Kolkata Police have initiated a probe.

Several faculty members and some senior doctors of the state-run medical college were taken aback when they received an email from someone masquerading as Professor Pitabaran Chakraborty. The email asked the recipients to send Rs 15,000 as the amount was required immediately. They were also promised that the amount would be returned by the end of the day. The emails were sent out on Monday.

"I was shocked and alarmed when I got the email. I knew that this could not be true as our principal would never do it. This is clearly the handiwork of some miscreants. Whoever has done it, even if the amount is small, this is a cybercrime and the culprit needs to be booked," said a senior doctor of the medical college.

Alarmed by the emails, the doctors reported the matter to the principal one by one the moment they noticed the email. The principal too was shell-shocked on being informed by the doctors. Sources said he immediately filed a report with the cybercrime department cell of Kolkata Police via email.
