  • Kolkata: Amit Paul, the 58-year-old former CPM councillor of Kamarhati Municipality, was found dead beside the railway tracks near Belgharia railway station on Wednesday.

Paul, popularly known as Gora, was a resident of Jatin Das Nagar in Belgharia and a prominent CPM leader in the Belgharia-Kamarhati area.

"He served as two-time councillor of ward 33 since 2010. Despite the party's recent setbacks, he remained actively involved. We demand a thorough investigation into his death," a party insider said.

According to family sources, Paul left home on Tuesday evening but did not return. His family lodged a missing complaint at Belgharia police station. The next morning, local residents noticed his body lying beside the railway tracks. "We are awaiting the autopsy report to determine the cause of death. Though initial findings suggest suicide, we registered an unnatural death case," said a GRP officer.

Manas Mukherjee, CPM's North 24 Parganas district secretariat committee member and former Kamarhati MLA, said: "We are deeply shocked. I suspect he was suffering from depression."
