  • 123 Kolkata: The New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) has assigned officials the responsibility of looking after several civic amenities, including street lights, parks, community markets and health centres, across New Town to provide better amenities to the residents. The decision to assign responsibilities was taken after NKDA held a meeting with residents' welfare associations and block associations last month.

Six officials have been assigned the different tasks, with their names, contact numbers, and the issues and areas they would look into for taking quick action being made public. "Residents can contact these officials to report specific issues and the officials will take the necessary steps," an official said.

For instance, one official has been tasked with looking into citizens' grievances regarding street lights, parks, bus stands, hawkers' markets, and community markets in Action Area III while another official has been entrusted to look into green verges, solar plants, cycle docking systems, EV charging stations, CCTV, and other issues.

Residents welcomed the move. "This was needed. Hopefully, citizens' amenities and services will improve," said Samaresh Das, a resident of New Town CB Block.

NKDA officials said the aim of this initiative is to acknowledge and resolve civic issues at the earliest. "The stress is on overall proper maintenance of civic facilities and amenities. The officers assigned the different tasks will coordinate with residents for better management of civic issues," said an official.
