12 Kolkata: The mother-daughter duo, Aarti and Falguni Ghosh, was involved in a bitter tussle with the victim, Sumita Ghosh, over some property in Jorhat, Assam. The duo was caught red-handed while trying to dump Sumita's body at Kumartuli ghat early on Tuesday morning.
Falguni reporteldy demanded a part of her aunt-in-law Sumita's property, given she too had a stake in her in-laws' property, even though she lived separately from her husband. "During questioning, Falguni kept highlighting her failed marriage. She, however, kept mum on how she came to know of Sumita's properties. She accepted that she had even tried to reconcile Sumita with her estranged husband, residing in Burdwan, with the hope that she might stake a claim on her property back in Assam," said an investigating officer.
The accused, who was arrested earlier in a theft case, planned to corner Sumita and hence did not stop the first time the victim lost consciousness during a heated argument. As soon as Sumita regained consciousness, she was subjected to another round of threats before being attacked.
Aarti and her daughter Falguni, a divorcee who resided in a rented house in Dakshin Bireshpally, were remanded in judicial custody for 14 days after being produced in a Barasat court on Thursday afternoon. The murder weapon is yet to be traced. "The duo told police that they dumped it in a pond," a senior police officer said.
