• Ensure safety of 5, HC tells Jibantala cops

  • 1234 Kolkata: Calcutta High Court on Friday directed South 24 Parganas' Jibantala PS to ensure that five petitioners who had moved the court seeking protection were not threatened or physically harmed as long as they stayed at any place within the jurisdiction of the police station.

The petitioners from Majherdighi had moved the HC saying they were not being able to stay at their homes because of threats from political rivals.

Petitioners' counsel submitted at the court of Justice Tirthankar Ghosh that the clients were not being able to enter their lands on which temporary bamboo structures had come up. Female members of the families were being threatened that the houses would be set on fire after the hearing of the matter at the HC, the counsel said. The state counsel contested the submission, stating the petitioners hadn't been dispossessed of their lands.

Justice Ghosh held that the court would not enter into the disputed question of the correctness of submissions and directed the state to file a report by the next hearing on March 7.
