  • Kolkata: A man, riding pillion on his brother's two-wheeler, died, while the brother was critically injured as a truck hit the scooter on the Howrah-bound flank of Vidyasagar Setu around 7am on Friday.

The deceased was a resident of Banbihari Bose Road in Howrah, Manoj Shaw (46). Manoj and his brother Amarnath (32) were returning home from a nursing home in Kolkata, where Amarnath's father-in-law had passed away on Thursday night, when the accident took place. Police said both the men on the scooter had their helmets on and the rider was not manoeuvring much. "It primarily seems there was massive negligence on the part of the truck driver," said a senior police officer. The impact was such that the two riders were thrown to the road and Manoj came under the truck's wheels.

"Police identified the truck from CCTV footage. A search is on for the driver who drove away," said police. The Shaws, already mourning Amarnath's father-in-law, demanded punishment for the truck driver.

Lalbazar has suggested multiple measures to ensure safer commute on Vidyasagar Setu, which came under scrutiny of chief minister Mamata Banerjee barely two months ago. This is in addition to the steps taken last June when CM Banerjee complained about the Setu traffic to KP.
