  • Darjeeling: Tourists can now enjoy a breathtaking view from the Loop Bridge at Bagrakote along NH 717A, which connects Bengal with Sikkim. The Kalimpong district administration has identified two designated viewpoints where tourist vehicles can stop for photographs. Due to the increasing number of visitors, the administration earlier issued an order restricting halting on the bridge. The growing popularity of the bridge has made it prone to accidents, especially with construction work still ongoing.

The Loop Bridge, located in the Kalimpong hills, is constructed on a 41-metre-high pillar and is also known as the ‘snake bridge' due to its unique architectural design. Locally, it's referred to as the ‘sell roti' bridge (named after a traditional Nepali sweet bread).

An order dated Jan 13, issued by Balasubramanian T, district magistrate of Kalimpong, prohibited taking selfies or reels on the under-construction bridge, allowing only vehicles to pass through without stopping. "To ensure tourist safety, we have identified two locations along the Loop Bridge at Bagrakote where vehicles can stop so that tourists can take photographs. The bridge has been attracting large crowds eager to enjoy the scenic route. We conducted an initial survey, and we're awaiting feedback from NHIDCL, based on which we will finalise the spots," said Balasubramanian.

He also mentioned that eight additional spots along NH 717A have been identified as tourist convenience points, where visitors can relax and enjoy the natural beauty.

"These viewpoints will enhance the tourism potential by offering visitors stunning views of the hills, valleys, and the natural beauty for which Kalimpong and its surroundings are known. With the growing number of tourists, this new attraction will likely stimulate local businesses and contribute to the overall economic growth," Balasubramanian added.
