Malda: In a rerun of the Goalpokhar incident, North Dinajpur witnessed another attack on police and the accused escaping. On Saturday, a police van was surrounded by hundreds in Chopra while the accused was being arrested. Some cops were injured and the accused was snatched away. He could not be traced till late in the evening.
Led by IC Suraj Thapa, a police team had gone to Kalikapur village to arrest Mujibar Rahman, a former TMC panchayat member, who was facing charges under the Arms Act. However, upon reaching Rahman's house, the police team was met by resistance from locals. As Rahman was being taken to the van, the mob chased the cops and managed to free Rahman. As many as 27 villagers were later detained.
TMC MLA Hamidur Rahman said: "I've heard that the police had no papers for arresting him (Mujibar). He had no criminal records. The villagers protested against rampaging his house."
In Jan, undertrial Sajjak Alam escaped from the prison van after shooting two policemen. After three days, he was gunned down by police.
