123 Kolkata: After state education minister Bratya Basu, Jadavpur University's interim VC Bhaskar Gupta was also heckled, and his shirt was torn when he went to meet the injured student at the hospital late on Saturday. Gupta, referring to the incident, said it was "most unruly and not at all desirable at the university."
Gupta told reporters on Sunday, "I went to see our students admitted to the hospital. As I was entering the hospital, some boys started shouting. However, I spoke with the two students who were admitted. I am trying to find out if anyone else was admitted anywhere. At that point, a group of boys jumped on me. They started shouting. They began pulling at my clothes, and my shirt got torn. In this situation, a few people helped me get out of the place. By then, my car arrived, and I left. They were absolutely unruly."
Gupta said, "It was a serious incident that happened on the campus, and we are not taking it lightly. We did not want to call the police to the campus, and I had words with the minister on this matter. However, we need to see how this sort of incident can be stopped in the near future." He added, "This kind of incident is not at all desirable at the university. I cannot take a decision alone. Decisions should be taken unanimously."
Gupta earned the protestors' ire when he tried to intervene while Basu was being heckled and his vehicle attacked. Sources said the VC has indicated he will engage with students and academics on the campus on Monday in a bid to resolve the issue.
