BMC plans new pumping stn to check Salt Lake waterlogging

Kolkata: The Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to set up a drop pumping station off Kestopur Canal to strengthen the drainage outfall system and quickly drain excess storm water to prevent waterlogging in the Salt Lake area.
Civic officials said a detailed project report is underway on the plan. "Now, the excess stormwater which is generated in Salt Lake, flows out into Kestopur Canal through several outfalls. A joint proposal is being prepared by BMC and the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) to set up a drop pumping station so that the excess stormwater first goes to the STP plant before it is purified and then falls into the canal," said BMC MMIC (Waste Management and Drainage) Debraj Chakraborty.
Chakraborty said, simultaneously a proposal is being prepared in which all the outfalls could be intercepted so that it could be drained out together before any waterlogging situation occurs. "The plan is to prevent waterlogging through speedy draining of excess stormwater with the help of the drop pumping station," he said. State PWD is working on plans to set up four new pumping stations at different locations off VIP Road, which will drain excess storm water into Bagjola Canal and prevent waterlogging at Haldiram crossing.
