Days after a woman and her daughter were allegedly found dragging a trolley bag with a body in it near Kumartuli Ghat on Strand Bank Road, the police conducted a test identification parade (TIP) on the women.
According to police sources, the seven-eight eyewitnesses were taken to the Dum Dum Correctional Home — where the women, currently in judicial custody, are lodged – to conduct the identification parade before a magistrate. Police have already moved a Barasat court for the women’s custody.
Aarati Ghosh and her daughter Falguni were arrested after they were allegedly seen dragging a heavy bag with blood stains on February 25. The two aroused the suspicions of morning walkers, who detained the woman and alerted the police.
The bag was allegedly found to contain the body of a woman later identified as 50-year-old Sumita Ghosh — Falguni’s aunt by marriage. While Aarti worked as an ayah at a nursing home, Falguni is estranged from her husband, a resident of Assam’s Jorhat.
According to the police, police are now looking to rely on CCTV footage from the duo’s rented accommodation in Madhyamgram to help establish the sequence of events of the day when they were arrested.
Since CCTV images from that day showed that the women were wearing masks, the police are now seeking court permission to conduct gait analysis — a study of how a person walks or runs – to help establish their identities.
Police claim that the women had killed their relative after a heated argument on February 23. They two then allegedly purchased the trolley bag from Burrabazar to dispose of the body, withdrew Rs 25,000 from the victim’s bank account, and used the money to order some jewellery.
“We’ll verify the suspects statements once we get their custody,” one official said.
