Submit Kakdwip murders progress report on May 2: HC to SIT
Times of India | 5 March 2025
Kolkata: Calcutta High Court on Tuesday directed the new investigating team under IGP Murlidhar Sharma to submit a progress report on the 2018 Kakdwip twin murder case on May 2.
Justice Tirthankar Ghosh's order came while declining a prayer by the counsel of petitioner Sabyasachi Chatterjee, urging the HC to conduct a court-monitored investigation in view of lapses pointed out by earlier benches in the police probe.
Govt counsel Sirsanya Bandyopadhyay stated that Sharma had taken charge of the investigation team only on Feb 19.
Sharma took over after senior IPS Damayanti Sen was relieved of the assignment of heading the SIT set up by the HC in 2023 to investigate the deaths of CPM activist Debabrata Das and his wife Usharani ahead of the 2018 panchayat polls, owing to a "short circuit" in the internal wiring of their house. Many Trinamool netas were named as accused.
