Kolkata: Mohammed Sahil Khan (25), a former JU student who hails from Birbhum, was one of the many foot soldiers who were part of a larger conspiracy to create anarchy, the police claimed on Monday.
The cops stated that Khan was questioned on Monday on two key aspects — one, who had asked him to come down to JU and two, the process in which the protest was organized. "We have got police remand of the accused till March 12 to find out the large motive of carrying out the mayhem at three to four spots in quick succession. We are certain that such vandalism cannot be demonstrated unless organized. The purpose is to know if the planning was to merely stage a protest or something bigger," said an officer.
Lalbazar though stopped short on commenting on how English Honours student Indranuj Ray got injured after protesting in front of education minister Bratya Basu's car on the JU campus. "In the absence of CCTV cameras, we are depending on conflicting witness accounts and video and mobile footage collected from media and those present at the spot. The investigation is at a primary stage," said an officer.
Cops said they will speak to Ray — named in two FIRs — or the driver of Basu's car "only when the time comes". "At present, we are collecting video evidence. Once we manage to identify suspects, we will send them notices to join the probe and record their statements with us," said the senior cop.
On Sunday, a forensic team had collected samples. "We are waiting to find out the material used to set the fire at the office of Sara Bangla Trinamool Sikshabandhu Samity," claimed an investigating officer.
