THE KOLKATA Police said on Monday that the search for those responsible in the Jadavpur University (JU) unrest case, said police. Following Saturday’s unrest Police are actively working to identify all involved individuals. Already, seven First Information Reports have been filed, one arrest has been made: A former JU student is in police custody until March 12. No arrest has been made yet in the case filed in connection with alleged reckless driving on the campus.
The seven FIRs have been filed on the basis of complaints from the WBCUPA, a professors’ association at JU, students and police. The WBCUPA’s complaint lists charges such as wrongful obstruction, assault with a dangerous weapon, abuse of women, robbery, and attempted murder. Students have filed a counter-complaint alleging reckless driving on campus.
Three FIRs name the arrested former student who was injured during the incident. Manikanta Paria, president of the West Bengal College and University Professors’ Association filed a complaint against multiple students, alleging assault against State Education Minister Bratya Basu and obstruction of his movement. Police have also filed complaints against unidentified students, citing wrongful restraint, assault and property damage.
Manikanta Paria, WBCUPA president and assistant professor, department of education, registered a complaint naming multiple students, for “assaulting Bratya Basu and obstructing his movement.”
“Various sections of the law, including those related to wrongful restraint, causing grievous harm, and damaging public property have been mentioned in the case,” said an officer. Police said they are also monitoring social media to prevent the spread of any misinformation with intention to create further unrest.
The suo motu complaints filed by the police are against unidentified students of JU for “wrongfully restraining Minister Basu and his companions and assaulting them with bricks, and also for damaging their cars”.
“No one involved will be spared,” said a senior officer of the Kolkata Police.
“WBCUPA filed the FIR under various charges including Sections 126 (2) (wrongful obstruction), 118(1)/54/324 (intentional assault with dangerous weapon), 74 (abuse of women), 54 (being present at the time of offence), 304 (robbery), 3(5) (committed assault) of the Penal Code.. There is also Section 109 (attempt to murder) of the Justice Code! On the other hand, a counter FIR has also been lodged by the students for allegedly driving recklessly in the campus. Apart from this, two suo motu FIRs were lodged by the police,” said an officer.
