A WEEK after the triple murders in Kolkata’s Tangra area, one person – Prasun Dey – was on Monday arrested by the city police in connection with the murder of his wife, sister-in-law and teenage daughter.
The arrest was made after his discharge from NRS Hospital, where he was treated for injuries after a car crash.
“Prasun Dey has been arrested,” confirmed Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rupesh Kumar. Dey has been arrested under section 103(1) (murder) of the BNS.
The move comes after detailed police interrogation following Dey’s discharge and a crucial statement from a relative, who is a juvenile, police sources said.
According to sources, around two days ago, the youth, the son of Prasun’s elder brother Pranay Dey, told a child rights commission that Prasun Dey was responsible for the deaths of his mother, aunt and cousin and that he had also attempted to harm him.
Earlier, the Kolkata Police identified the two brothers as the primary suspects, ruling out “any external involvement” in the crime. The brothers initially claimed that the deaths were the fallout of a suicide pact, alleging that the family consumed porridge laced with sleeping pills. However, police investigations revealed inconsistencies in their statements.
Further investigation revealed that the Dey family, who operated a business, was facing significant financial difficulties, which is now being examined as a potential motive, police sources said.
