Malda: At least six teachers were injured at Chamagram High School, under Baishnabnagar police station, on Wednesday as Higher Secondary Examination candidates turned violent over checks for mobile phones.
The school was hosting students from Kanditola High Madrasah, Char Sujapur High School and Parlalpur High School. Candidates were being scanned with a metal detector before being allowed into the exam hall to take the English paper. A few students refused to be checked and a heated altercation took place with a few teachers. The situation was defused for a while.
Soon after, however, some students forced their way into the school's office and began to ransack it. The teachers who tried to stop them were assaulted, and a pot of hot water was overturned, causing injuries. Cops guarding the venue were joined by a force from Baishnabnagar police station, who brought the situation under control. The teachers were taken to a local health centre. The exam started later with greater police presence.
Bilas Mandal, a Chamagram High School teacher, said: "Some candidates were against being scanned by the metal detector, but we were committed to following the council's directive. They turned violent, and our teachers were injured."
President of West Bengal Higher Secondary Council, Chiranjit Bhattacharya, who was in Malda, reacted sharply to the incident. "Eleven candidates from Kanditola High Madrasah were identified as being involved in the assault, and they were allowed to take the exam in a separate room. We are waiting for a report from the centre. If needed, the students will be summoned to the council along with their schools."
