A day after Prasun Dey, one of the accused in the Tangra triple murder case was arrested by the Kolkata Police in connection with the murder of his wife, sister-in-law and teenage daughter, he was produced in Sealdah Court on Tuesday where he refused free legal aid for his representation in the case.
Free legal aid assistant Kabita Sarkar informed Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Arijit Mondal, “He (Prasun Dey) does not want any lawyer. He wants to go unrepresented. Once the chargesheet is submitted he has said he will admit to the crime. He has not signed the bail papers or any other legal papers.”
Explaining Dey that he is entitled to free legal aid, Mondal said, “Why do you not want a lawyer, you will receive free legal aid, no money will be charged. Do you want to say anything?”
While Dey maintained complete silence, he just said no from behind the mask he was wearing.
Meanwhile, the public prosecutor submitted, “The police wants his custody for four days for the reconstruction of the crime scene and further questioning.”
“Do you realise what is happening in the court, the police want your custody, you will not be sent back to jail; you will be sent to police custody. Would you like to say anything?” the Magistrate asked Dey.
Prasun Dey was arrested on Monday after he was discharge from NRS Hospital, where he was under treatment for injuries after a car crash. Pranay Dey, Prasun, and Pranay’s minor son were injured when their car crashed into a pillar on February 19.
Before he was arrested, the son of Prasun’s elder brother Pranay Dey, sources said, had told a child rights commission that Prasun Dey was responsible for the deaths of his mother, aunt and cousin and that he had also attempted to harm him.
