  • 12 Kolkata: Several AIDSO girls were allegedly assaulted by Trinamool Chhatra Parishad members and policemen on Monday during a protest on the Vidyasagar University campus in West Midnapore. The students alleged on Wednesday that they were tortured inside Kotwali police station. AIDSO functionaries said the injured members underwent medical examination but were yet to get the certificates.

Mridul Sarkar, vice-president, AIDSO, said they would move court against the atrocities.

The AIDSO members staged the demonstration to protest against the attack on Jadavpur University students on Saturday. Barnali Nayak, a BEd student, claimed they were protesting on the VU campus when Trinamool supporters attacked them, and soon policemen joined in the assault. "We were physically lifted by force and removed from the campus. While arresting, several of our female activists were molested by the on-duty policemen. A female worker was hit on the chest and she fell unconscious. There was no medical facility for the injured inside the thana," said Barnali, who reportedly sustained injuries on her leg.

She said the arrested AIDSO workers were taken to the Kotwali PS. "Four of the girls were assaulted. Burning wax was poured on their hands and legs and some were tortured with boots and belts by cops," alleged Manishankar Pattanayak, state president, AIDSO.

"Police verbally abused a tribal activist. We will lodge a complaint against the torture of an ST woman and write to the President," said Sarkar.
