In a turn of events, police have arrested the driver of the head of an event management firm who died after a high-speed car chase in Paschim Bardhaman district’s Panagarh on February 24.
The driver, identified as Rajdeo Sharma. was arrested by the Kanksa police after the 27-year-old victim Sutandra Chattopadhyay’s mother Tanushree Chattopadhyay filed a police complaint with the Chandannagar police station on March 1, demanding a thorough investigation against all those involved.
Chandannagar resident Chattopadhyay was killed and four other passengers were injured in Panagarh after a chase led to a car crash. The police had denied the “eve-teasing angle” and claimed it was a fallout of one car chasing another.
Initially, the victim’s colleagues had alleged that inebriated men verbally abused Chattopadhyay, chased and hit her car, causing it to overturn.
After analysing the CCTV footage, however, the police claimed that Chattopadhyay’s vehicle was one pursuing the white car.
The police have also claimed that during questioning, Sharma admitted that though the white car had first hit their vehicle, Chattopadhyay then asked him to chase the car.
The chase ensued with speeds touching 100kmph as Chattopadhyay’s car tailed the white car and veered into a road from the national highway, the police said.
“So far, two persons have been arrested in this case. Rajdeo Sharma was driving the victim’s vehicle,” said Sunil Kumar Chowdhury, Commissioner of Police, Asansol Durgapur Police Commissionerate.
According to police sources, Sharma was arrested Monday from Bhadreswar in Hooghly. He has been booked under BNS Sections 105 (culpable homicide), 125(a) (endangering human life), 281 (rash driving), and 324(5) (mischief). Earlier, Bablu Yadav, the alleged owner of the white car that “chased” the victim’s car was arrested. Yadav was allegedly driving the vehicle at the time of the incident.
