• Digital arrest conman held in Rajasthan

  • Kolkata: A 20-year-old man from Rajasthan, Mahesh Kumar, was apprehended from Alwar on Tuesday by Bidhannagar cops for allegedly defrauding a 76-year-old woman from Lake Town of Rs 11 lakh on Dec 24, 2024. The victim, Manju Ganguly, received a WhatsApp video call from the fraudster posing as a Mumbai Cyber Crime Branch officer.

    Kumar, wearing a police uniform, informed Ganguly that her Aadhaar card was being misused for illegal activities like unauthorised SIM card activations, illegal trading, sexual harassment, and fake gambling advertisements.

    Ganguly was then subjected to ‘digital arrest'. She was confined to her room for two consecutive days through continuous video surveillance. Under severe threats, she was forced into transferring Rs 11 lakhs to an account specified by Kumar, police claimed. tnn
