  • 1234 Kolkata: A day after a couple killed themselves after murdering their kid in Kasba, cops claimed that a family property issue revolving around six cottah, along with a Rs 10 lakh loan taken by auto owner Somnath Roy (40) for his son's treatment, led to the family taking such a decision.

"Primary enquiry shows that Roy and his wife Sumitra (35) took this loan and were unable to repay it even after selling one of their autos. It was then that they wanted to sell a six-cottah plot. However, their maternal uncle Pradip Kumar Ghosal and aunt Nilima Ghosal, along with a third relative, were not giving them permission to do so. We have multiple statements from neighbours who say the relatives often used foul language against the Roys," said a cop at Lalbazar.

The cops confirmed that the FIR pertaining to abetment also had three other names — all creditors — whom the Roys accused of "misappropriating" their property. One of the three is a woman. Thus, a total of six are named in the FIR. "We have summoned one of these three creditors. All the others will be grilled. If required, they will be arrested too," said a joint CP at Lalbazar.

According to police, the postmortem of three-year-old child Rudranil shows he had abrasions over the root and bridge of the nose and bruises over the lower and upper lip. Thus, the cause of death was due to asphyxia (smothering), homicidal and antemortem in nature.

Sumitra carried one ligature mark over the neck and scalp haematoma at the right fronto-tempo-occipital region and right black eye. Thus, the cause of death was due to the effects of suicidal hanging, antemortem in nature. Roy carried one ligature mark over his neck. His death was also due to the effects of suicidal hanging, antemortem in nature.

Meanwhile, the cops produced Somnath and Nilima at the Alipore court on Wednesday, hours after they were arrested on charges of abetment to suicide, criminal conspiracy, and cheating. The court sent both the accused to police custody till March 12.
