Kolkata: The Bengal STF has expanded its investigation into illegal cartridge sales, issuing a notice to an employee of a central Kolkata gun shop in the Bowbazar area. He was asked to face some questions on the cartridge stocks and their eventual sale in 2024.
While the current investigation has not revealed any wrongdoing by any shop owners, the incident prompted Lalbazar to implement stricter monitoring measures for arms dealers across the city. The Arms Act division of KP initiated a comprehensive documentation system, creating individual files for all 14 licensed arms dealers within the Kolkata Police jurisdiction. These files will maintain detailed records of weekly sales of arms and ammunition." The new documentation system will help maintain better vigil on arms and ammunition sales throughout the city," said a senior police official.
The crackdown followed a significant breakthrough in mid-Feb when 190 rounds of cartridges were recovered in the Ishwaripur area under Jibantala police station. The operation led to the arrest of four individuals, including an employee of a Kolkata-based arms shop who was arrested in Shantipur.
