  • 12 Kolkata: Kolkata Traffic Police has mooted a proposal to create extra cuts on the median divider of Maa Flyover so that vehicles breaking down can be towed away faster, minimising traffic disruption on the elevated corridor.

In the last district road safety committee meeting earlier this week, which was attended by all civic agencies and stakeholders, like RVNL and the state transport department, KP commissioner Manoj Verma and Joint CP (traffic) Rupesh Kumar suggested several measures to cut down on Maa Flyover congestions.

Police said they asked for the cuts even on AJC Bose Road Flyover so that wreckers could reach breakdown spots at the earliest. "At present, we need to use wreckers from one particular end of the bridge, depending on the lane on which the breakdown takes place. Once the cuts are available, we can use tow trucks from either end," said an officer. "The entire idea is to avoid the shutting down of the flyover. At present, breakdowns lead to the shutting of one or both flanks of the flyover for five to even 15 minutes," said an East Traffic Guard officer.

The KMDA, which had gave its consent to build decks at four point on Maa to park broken-down vehicles, said it would consider the new proposal as well. KMDA officials pointed out that it had already created some extra.

Among the other proposals discussed at the meeting was the speedy construction of the extended decks on Maa Flyover, setting up of rubberised or metalised crash barriers and kite string repellents along the entire length of the flyover, and building pedestrian barriers below.
