A 20-year-old man was arrested in Rajasthan’s Alwar on Tuesday by Kolkata’s Laketown police station officials in connection with a cyber fraud case, said police.
The man identified as Mahesh Kumar belongs to Baskripalnagar, Kishangarh in Rajasthan.
Last year, in December a complaint was filed under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections related to cheating and fraud, by DumDum Park, Laketown, resident Manju Ganguly, 76, who was duped out of her life savings of Rupees 11 lakh.
The scammer, impersonating a Mumbai Cyber Crime Branch officer, contacted Ganguly via WhatsApp video call, falsely claiming her Aadhaar card was being misused for illegal activities, the police said.
The scammer then subjected Ganguly to a “digital arrest,” detaining her virtually for two days and during that time, the scammer coerced Ganguly into transferring her life savings to an account provided by the accused, the police further said.
Kolkata police traced Kumar through his mobile tower locations and IP address, leading to his apprehension in Alwar. Further, investigation is on.
