  • Representative Image KOLKATA: A Kolkata resident who flew from Delhi to Vijaywada on work on Wednesday alleged that Rs 68,300 in cash was stolen in transit from his luggage. The airline ground staff with whom he lodged a complaint said the carrier is conducting an inquiry.

According to Dipak Kumar Joshi of Ghoshpara in Baguiati, he was travelling with only one bag on the IndiGo flight 6E 2263 from Delhi to Vijaywada on Wednesday. Hence, he kept Rs 2.2 lakh in cash in the registered bag.

On reaching Vijaywada, he found the bag's chain slightly open, which raised his suspicion. He then took the bag to the IndiGo counter and opened it. Inside, notes were missing from each of the five bundles — four of Rs 500 denomination and one of Rs 200. All the bundles, Joshi claimed, were stamped by the bank and contained 100 notes each.

"The chain was opened and notes were removed from each of the bundles. I do not know whether the theft happened in Delhi or in Vijaywada," he said.

A veteran aviation security official said the theft could have happened at Delhi after the bundles were detected in X-ray of the registered luggage. "If cash has gone missing from a bag, whoever has stolen it must have known about the money. It was not a random pilferage," the official said.

A priest by profession, Joshi travelled to Bengaluru and then to Rajasthan's Mehendipur before making a stop in Delhi en route to Vijaywada. "I have come to Vijaywada for a puja at the factory of a client in Delhi. Since he was delayed, he gave me the cash for use at the puja and was to be handed over in Vijaywada," said Joshi.
