  • 123 Kolkata: The younger of the Dey brothers of Tangra, Prasun Dey, may give his confessional statement before a lower court judge on March 10. On Thursday, the chief public prosecutor of Sealdah court, Suvendu Ghosh, informed the court that Prasun wanted to make a confession in front of the magistrate. Prasun also stated that he did not have a lawyer and did not wish to appoint one.

According to sources, police recorded Prasun's statement when he was in cop custody. The judge wanted to know if he had recorded his statement on his own or under duress. He said it was on his own volition. The judge also asked Kavita Sarkar, Legal Aid defence lawyer, if she met Prasun. Kavita replied that she did not meet him that day as Prasun informed her the previous day that he did not wish to have a lawyer.

Cops, who questioned elder brother Pranay and spoke to his son Pratip, said both would need two more weeks to recover. Cops claimed that Pranay was misleading the family about the financial turmoil since 2023, even though their combined debt had scaled Rs 16 crore. "We found that it was Pranay who maintained the finances. He reportedly did not disclose the severely constrained financial condition for months, hoping to make a turnaround. We found that he was the main decision-maker as far as mortgaging of family property is concerned. The financial trouble accelerated since Dec 2023, coinciding with the fall in exports and exit of a couple of their long-time vendors," Pranay reportedly told cops.
