  • Prasun Dey, the arrested accused in the Tangra triple murder case, on Thursday told the Sealdah court that he wants to “confess to my crime”, in connection with the murder of his wife, sister-in-law and teenage daughter last month.

The Chief Public prosecutor submitted in the court of  Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Arijit Mandal that Prasun Dey is willing to record his statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), which involves a confession or statement recorded by a magistrate.

Earlier, ACJM Mandal had directed the police to produce Dey before him to speak to him.

Mandal asked Dey, “You (Prasun Dey) do not wish to keep an advocate, do you have an advocate? Did you have any problems while in police custody? The statement which you have given while in police custody did you give it at your own will?”

On this, Dey said, “Yes, I want to admit to the crime.”

The ACJM informed Dey that the police do not wish to take his further custody and thus he will be sent to jail custody. “The police no longer want your custody, so you will be sent to jail. There you will get time to think. There is a procedure for the recording of your statement,” Mandal said.

The court has sent him to 14-day judicial custody.

The case came to light on February 19, when the Dey brothers crashed their car into a pillar along the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass in what appeared to be an attempt to end their lives. While being treated for their injuries, they disclosed to police that the bodies of their wives and a girl were lying inside their residence in Tangra. Following the revelation, a police team rushed to the house and recovered the bodies. An autopsy conducted on February 20 confirmed that the victims had been murdered. On February 25, police officials stated that their investigation had led them to believe that no outsiders were involved in the crime.

The Kolkata Police arrested Prasun on Monday and next day in the Sealdah court he refused free legal aid for his representation in the case.

Meanwhile, Prasun’s elder brother Pranay Dey, and his minor son who were injured in the accident are undergoing treatment
