Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Friday directed the state not to grant permission for any rally in the vicinity of Jadavpur University till the court takes up a petition on March 13 on the recent fracas on the campus.
Justice Tirthankar Ghosh also made amendments to the route of a rally, proposed by the BJP, on Sunday. Justice Ghosh ordered that the rally, with 750 participants, should begin from Nabina Cinema on Anwar Shah Road and end near Calcutta Pi restaurant, 100 yards from Jadavpur police station.
The petitioner moved the HC, seeking permission for a rally from Jadavpur station to Sulekha More with their counsel, pointing out that Trinamool, led by a minister, had taken out a rally on the clash day and on Thursday. The counsel submitted that DYFI also held a rally on Wednesday.
But Justice Ghosh said processions in the campus's vicinity was not desirable, at least now. "An illegality can't be cited as a precedent. Choose some other area," he said. The state counsel had opposed the BJP prayer for the Jadavpur station-Sulekha More rally. Justice Ghosh said he was not averse to a peaceful protest rally but told the petitioner to change its route. —Subrata Chattoraj
