A theatre worker and member of the Minerva Repertory Theatre group, Swagata Chakraborty resigned and said that after the incident at Jadavpur University, where students’ protests against the group’s Chairman and state education minister Bratya Basu turned violent, “there is no point in staying there”.

Chakraborty posted her resignation letter on Facebook, following which she was allegedly trolled on social media. “I have no plan to review my decision,” she said.

With experience of almost eleven years, Chakraborty is a full-timer in Kolkata group theatre. A diploma holder in architectural engineering, she has worked in Bengali and Hindi films as well. She has worked in different theatre groups in Kolkata, and around six months ago, she joined the Minerva Repertory.

On March 1, SFI, AIDSO and other left students’ organisations gathered in front of state education minister Bratya Basu’s convoy on the university campus, demanding students’ union elections across the state. During the agitation, some protesting students allegedly vandalised the minister’s car. On the other hand, it was also alleged that the minister’s convoy ran over one protesting student, Indranuj Roy, who was severely injured and later admitted to a private hospital.

Reparatory sources said the organisation accepted Chakraborty’s resignation. Chakraborty said to The Indian Express, “I do not belong to any political organisation. This is my personal decision and (the reason) why I took such a decision (is written) in my resignation letter.”

After her resignation, Basu said, “I can only wish her best of luck for her future.”
