JALPAIGURI: A Bangladeshi cattle and contraband smuggler was shot dead by BSF in retaliatory action while trying to smuggle cattle into the neighbouring nation.
The incident occurred in the early hours on Friday along the India-Bangladesh border at Khalpara in Jalpaiguri's Rajganj.
The man was with a group of 15-20 Bangladeshi miscreants who crossed the border illegally and entered well inside Indian territory after breaching the fencing.
This party was joined by miscreants from the Indian side. The intention was the smuggling of cattle and contraband with the help of smugglers from the Indian side.
The BSF party detected the intrusion and asked them to surrender. However, the miscreants attacked the BSF jawans with sharp weapons, lathis, and pelted stones at them.
The BSF jawans fired non-lethal ammunition like stun grenades and PAG to disperse them. But the miscreants did not leave the area, continued fighting with the party, and tried to snatch the weapon. A jawan on duty was badly injured in the attack.
Seeing an imminent threat to his life, he fired from INSAS to deter them, and then they fled towards either side, taking advantage of the darkness in the area. During a search of the area after the incident, one unknown injured person was seen who later succumbed to his injuries. Two cattle were also recovered from the spot along with iron rods and lathis used in the attack.
During the search, a border fence breach was also detected. The injured jawan was evacuated to the hospital after first aid, and the condition of the jawan is stable.
The man was later identified as Mohammad Al Amin (36) from Jinat Para village in the Sadar Upazila of Panchagarh district. A flag meeting between BSF and BGB was held later in the day where BGF claimed the body of the deceased.
Smuggling of cattle to Bangladesh is a lucrative business across the state, and Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar are a few of the most preferred districts due to their contiguity with Bangladesh.
