2nd loan agent in cop net for Kasba family suicide

123 Kolkata: Kasba cops have arrested a 24-year-old loan agent for allegedly helping auto owner Somnath Roy (40), who died by suicide earlier last week at his Haltu residence along with his wife Sumitra Roy (35) and son Rudranil (3), get Rs 10 lakh in loans through multiple financial institutions.
The accused, Somsubhra Mondal, was demanding a hefty commission from Somnath. Cops believe that Somnath might have also fallen victim to online fraud as a large section of this loan was approved through questionable apps.
Somnath took another Rs 10 lakh loan from another agent, Chanchal Mukhopadhyay, who arranged it from a leading public sector bank. Mukhopadhyay too was arrested earlier along with maternal uncle Pradip Ghosal and maternal aunt, Nilima Ghosal. Total number of arrest in this case has now reached four.
There are at least two other persons on the suspect list.
Somnath, claimed sources, accumulated substantial debt from multiple financial institutions in the past 18 months, even as he was desperate for treatment for his son who was born with certain health complications. As an auto driver-cum-operator, his colleagues claimed he found the cost of treatment beyond his means.
According to joint CP (crime & traffic) Rupesh Kumar, Mondal was arrested around 12.15 am from his residence in Sonarpur for his alleged role in helping the deceased get loans at high interest.
Mondal facilitated loans of Rs 5 lakh from a private bank, Rs 1.6 lakh from an instant loan providing platform, Rs 2 lakh from a loan app and another Rs 2 lakh from a financial firm. Sources said he received huge commissions for arranging these loans but kept demanding more from Somnath just like Mukhopadhyay.
Mondal was produced before the ACJM in Alipore and taken into police custody. On Tuesday, the family of three was found dead at their Purba Pally residence in Haltu.
