123 Kolkata: A 38-year-old cab driver, who was beaten up by several local youths in front of his family in the early hours of March 5 over a parking dispute, died in hospital on Saturday morning. The incident had happened in Bijoygarh area of Jadavpur.
The deceased, Jayanta Sen, succumbed to injuries at 6.30 am on Saturday with doctors claiming he suffered internal bleeding. Cops have identified five of the accused and are conducting raids to nab them. A case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder has been registered. No arrests had been made till Saturday evening.
According to police, the incident began around 10.30 pm on March 4 when Jayanta was returning home after his shift. Upon parking his app cab in front of his residential apartment at Bijoygarh, he accidentally hit a two-wheeler that fell.
"He was trying to park the car at the usual spot when it accidentally hit a two-wheeler that was parked in the tight space. Several two-wheelers were parked that evening as youths were watching the ICC Champion's Trophy semi-final match between India and Australia at a neighbour's house. Jayanta had honked to alert the two-wheeler owner so that he could request the person to move it a bit. But when no one responded, he had himself moved the vehicle to make space to park the car. While parking, the car must have grazed the scooter that toppled," said Jayanta's brother Prasanta.
Shortly after the incident, around five youths confronted Sen and threatened him. But it did not escalate as the youths went back to watch the match and Jayanta returned home.
"But around 1.30 am, around 10-12 youths returned, called Jayanta out and began assaulting him without warning. When my sister-in-law and I tried to intervene, we were pushed and beaten up as well. By the time the accused left, my brother was badly injured and unable to speak properly. Initially, we tried providing him first aid but realised he needed medical attention. We took him to Baghajatin State General Hospital. When his condition deteriorated, we moved him to the KPC Medical College. The doctors said he was critical and developed Septicemia. He finally stopped responding and was declared dead on Saturday," said Raju Pal, a relative.
Following the death, Prasanta filed a complaint at Jadavpur PS, based on which police have registered a case (number 48) under Section 105/3(5) of the BNS Act. Irate neighbours also attacked a sedan, allegedly belonging to one of the accused and parked in the area, and ransacked it.
