  • Kolkata: A 14-year-old girl who went missing from a village under Nafarganj PS in Basanti was found at Kolkata airport on Friday while attempting to board a flight to Port Blair. The flight ticket was purchased by a man she met on social media. Police suspect she was trapped in an online romantic relationship that would have culminated in her being trafficked if she boarded the flight.

Around 11 am on Friday, CISF sub-inspector Rahul Kumar, on duty in the security hold area at Kolkata airport, spotted a girl travelling alone. The girl was carrying an Aadhaar card that revealed she was 14 years old. She was at the boarding gate to take a flight to Port Blair.

When officers from the Crime & Intelligence Wing of CISF questioned why her parents were not accompanying her, she fumbled, raising suspicion about whether she was travelling with her parents' knowledge. On being further questioned, she gave a contact number. When a CISF officer dialled the number, the man who answered said he was from her village and revealed that she was missing from home.

When Basanti PS was contacted, an officer confirmed that a kidnapping case was registered on Thursday. On further questioning, she revealed that she was the daughter of a Goranbose village resident and that she was travelling to Port Blair to meet a friend whom she met online. The same person had also arranged for her air ticket.

Confirmed that the minor's travel was unauthorised, the CISF then handed over the girl to the NSCBI Airport police around 2.15 pm for necessary action. The latter has contacted Basanti PS to arrange for the girl's return home.
