  • Kolkata: Police on Saturday recorded the statement of Jadavpur University professor Omprakash Mishra, who was reportedly attacked in the clash on the campus on March 1. Cops also recorded the statement of JU interim VC Bhaskar Gupta after visiting him at the private hospital he is admitted to. Gupta's kurta, which reportedly got torn in the fracas, was seized by police as evidence.

Kolkata Police commissioner Manoj Verma said, "The high court has requested us for a report on the unrest at Jadavpur University. We have prepared that report and will submit it to court. Nothing more can be said at this moment."

Police, which is investigating eight FIRs registered for the JU fracas on March 1, recorded the initial statement of first-year student Indranuj Roy, who was injured in the incident. Cops also questioned three other students even as they recorded statements of prime witnesses.

Following police summons, Left neta Srijan Bhattacharya, who was earlier the state secretary of the SFI, visited the Jadavpur police station in the evening to record his statement.

Shortly after the clash at JU last Saturday, when higher education minister Bratya Basu had gone to the campus for a WBCUPA event, CPM's student wing, SFI, had held a press conference. The clash had broken out with students demanding union elections. At the news meet, SFI members presented various photos and videos, claiming Indranuj was hit by Bratya Basu's car. Trinamool workers began to counter the photos and videos. "Now, police directly summoned Bhattacharya, the former state secretary of SFI, to present all the information he had about the incident," said an officer.

Sources also confirmed that the three JU students who were questioned by police were identified from the multiple video footage from the spot. A statement of a WBCUPA member was also recorded.
