123 Kolkata: Two Trinamool Congress functionaries, Bikash Singh and Shontu Das, both in mid-40s and members of Kamarhati town Trinamool Congress Committee, were shot at in Belgharia's Uttar Basudebpur on Saturday night while they were returning home from a party meeting.
The duo was rushed to College of Medicine and Sagore Datta Hospital, Kamarhati, where they are undergoing treatment. Doctors said their condition was serious.
According to sources, around five-six miscreants came on two motorbikes and stopped in front of the duo. Two among them whipped out revolvers and fired at them least twice. Both of them sustained bullet injuries, one in the chest and the other in the hand. The assailants fled the spot soon after the shooting.
On hearing gunshots, locals scattered in panic and ran for cover. Later, locals found the two lying in a pool of blood and took them to hospital. A large police contingent from Barrackpore Commissionerate led by senior officers reached the spot and cordoned off the area. Some locals launched an agitation demanding arrest of the culprits. A senior officer said they were checking CCTV footage to identify the culprits.
