123 Kolkata: After a long delay, the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started construction work for Rabindra Bhavan, which was conceptualised long ago. The two-storey building, being set up on a 36-cottah plot in Salt Lake FE Block opposite Central Park and to be dedicated as a Tagore research centre, will have an archive and exhibits, art galleries, an auditorium, a library, conference rooms, and seminar halls.
Civic officials said that the Rabindra Bhavan project is being executed with funds generated by organising the Bidhannagar Mela Utsav. "The civic body earned Rs 1.9 crore from the fair, which is being utilised in executing the project. Building construction work already commenced," said a BMC official. Piling work was completed last year.
Civic officials said there were some changes in the building plan, as it will be a two-storey structure for now. A statue of Tagore has been installed in the front portion of thesite. Both floors will be used commercially as required by the authorities. There will be an auditorium for staging various plays written by Tagore and various musical repertoires, and there will be art galleries dedicated to Tagore, exhibition rooms, and a library to display Tagore's works. There will also be rooms for scholars to conduct research work.
