  • 1234 Durgapur: A marriage party turned into a murder scene on Sunday in Durgapur after the groom's kin shot the bride's 19-year-old cousin, Atish Bed, over an altercation about which Hindi song to play at the venue.

Three persons belonging to the groom's family, Akshay Pasi (30) and Anokhi Pasi (48), both residents of Kulti's Barakar, and Biki Paswan (30), a Jamtara resident, were arrested for murder and possession of illegal firearms. Although cops said they will confirm the cause of death after a post-mortem.

The incident took place at Bhambey Colony under ward 27 of Durgapur Municipality Corporation. The bride, Bed's elder cousin, was to wed a resident of Barakar, West Burdwan. The wedding was called off after the incident led to large-scale vandalism and violence.

The marriage party was in full swing with the groom's relatives enjoying themselves at the venue. However, according to allegations, the music was changed, which led to a fracas between the two families. The groom's friends demanded the music be played according to their choice. When the altercation turned into a scuffle, Bed had intervened.

Allegedly, a group from the groom's side dragged Bed and was accused of shooting at his chest. The bride's relatives immediately shifted Bed to Durgapur Hospital, but he was declared brought dead.

The bride's uncle, Avinash Bed, who lodged the FIR, said, "A few among the groom's kin attacked my nephew and fired at him with a pistol on his chest. All this took place over a petty matter of a song being changed. We demand strict action."

The bride's father, Jadughar Bed, said the victim came to their home to attend the marriage ceremony. "Because of this fiasco, my daughter's wedding has also been called off."
