Kolkata: The detective wing of the Barrackpore Commissionerate identified the gang members, including the mastermind, involved in the Belgharia shooting, where Trinamool Congress functionary Bikash Singh and a local, Santu Das, were shot at a tea stall on Saturday.
"A motorbike used by the accused, whose faces were concealed behind a helmet, was seized from a Belgharia-Kamarhati hideout. The prime suspect and his associates have been identified. Prima facie, it appears that an old rivalry led to the attack. We hope to nab the culprits soon," said Ajay Kr Thakur, police commissioner of Barrackpore.
Cops said the attack was orchestrated by Indal Yadav, a criminal from the Kamarhati-Belgharia area. "The owner of the motorbike used in the crime was detained and is being questioned. All three accused, including Yadav, came on the two-wheeler," said an investigating officer.
Locals said that around 8.40 pm, goons fired at least thrice at Singh while he and his wife, Sangeeta, were standing at a tea stall near Belgharia station. "One bullet hit Singh, while another struck Das, who was standing nearby," said a local trader.
