  • Kolkata: The traffic police will launch a special anti-drink-driving campaign on Wednesday evening, in the run-up to Holi.

"We urge residents to follow the basic Holi norms—no drink- or rash riding or driving, no lane-cutting, and no flouting of one-way rules. This is especially true for bikers," said an officer. The checks, police said, would be carried out even in the mornings till March 16. The number of night nakas is likely to increase from 25-30 to 60 per night. "This will be one of the biggest deployments since last year's Durga Puja and Christmas," said a Lalbazar officer, adding they aimed to keep accident deaths on Holi to zero, like last year. Police said the checks would be more intense this time as it would be an extended weekend.

"We are suspending licences. In certain cases, we may recommend other legal measures, besides booking errant drivers and riders for dangerous driving and fining them Rs 5,000," said a Lalbazar officer.
