123 Kolkata: Kolkata Traffic Police has sent an SOS to civic agencies, asking them to immediately address the uneven road surfaces on two key roads in the city - Cathedral Road and Taratala flyover. Police sources said there were multiple complaints from commuters, especially those using Cathedral Road, as the speed of vehicles tends to be higher than the city's average.
"There were instances when minor accidents took place close to Rabindra Sadan on the rightmost flank, involving passengers travelling on buses in the rear seat after they were thrown in the air on impact at least two spots here," said an officer. According to police, KMC has already undertaken scrapping and repairing work on the top layers across major road stretches like SP Mukherjee Road and EM Bypass. "Unlike these roads that are much longer stretches, we are highlighting only the specific spots which are disturbing the normal flow of traffic and will require only a few hours of work," said an officer.
According to a civic official, the KMC roads department will commence a detailed tender process once it receives approval from the civic brass. "We undertook the smoothening work of one of the most crucial stretches of EM Bypass that is extensively utilised by motorists and bikers. Once the work is completed, the number of freak accidents due to the presence of craters or undulations will diminish significantly. We are maintaining our focus on this stretch and need to utilise all our expertise to render the road surface smooth for motorists and bikers," said the civic official.
