  • 12 Kolkata: A 19-year-old student from Kolkata, pursuing law at an institute in Jodhpur, was among three students from the law school who died on Tuesday morning when a bus in which they were travelling collided with a truck and overturned on Nagaur district's Ladnun Road. Police said 24 other students from Nation Law School, Jodhpur, were injured in the accident.

A resident of Salt Lake in Kolkata, Aarav Midha was studying at the law college and had travelled to Chandigarh 700 km away with 29 other students to attend a four-day sports fest. The accident happened around 5.30 am, at the fag end of the overnight return journey when the bus was less than two hours from the university. The bus had been arranged by the university to ferry students.

Aarav's family members — his parents Rohit and Divya, and younger brother Aarush — are in shock. A person close to the family said Divya last spoke to Aarav and expressed her unease over the long overnight bus journey prior to the trip. Rohit is a financial analyst while Divya is a doctor.

Aarav enrolled in the law school after passing out from La Martiniere for Boys. "He was a very good student and had diverse interests. He was also a darling of the family and popular among his friends," said a person close to the family. "The body was flown into Kolkata on Wednesday, and the last rites were conducted at Keoratola crematorium. On Thursday, his chautha will be held at Punjab Bhawan in the presence of family and friends."

A legal intern at two reputable law firms in Kolkata and Delhi in his first year of studies, Aarav was closely associated with the NLUJ, where he volunteered as the copy editor at the NLUJ Law Review Journal and Blogs since Sept last year. His LinkedIn bio states he was also a member of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee (ADRC) — a group that promotes ADR as a way to resolve disputes using methods like arbitration, mediation, and negotiation.

Cops at Surpaliya police station said there were about 30 students on the bus. Apart from Aarav, the other deceased students are Aarushi Gupta (21) from New Delhi and Harshit Vashistha (19) from Chennai. The truck with which the bus collided fled the spot. Locals rescued the students and took them to a health centre, where the three were declared dead. Police have filed a case under section 281 (negligence in driving) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against the unidentified truck driver.
