Kolkata: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) will plant nearly 150 Palash (Flame tree) saplings between Jatin Das Park and Hazra Road to commemorate Aug16, the day on which chief minister Mamata Banerjee was attacked by CPM workers in 1990. They have submitted a proposal to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation to survey the area.
If all goes well, the drive may begin on June 5, the World Environment Day. In Jan, TMC workers received approval from the party to plant saplings. "Palash is very close to Didi's heart. It also has the colour of fire. Didi is a firebrand leader, and we wanted to bring a resemblance of that," said a party functionary. .
Party workers mentioned in a letter to the cvic body that the spot at Jatin Das Park was the same where Banerjee was attacked. On Aug 16, 1990, Banerjee, then a youth Congress leader, was agitating at Hazra when she was assaulted. "At present, there is a bust of Indiraji and Rajivji at Hazra. We have also proposed to refurbish that and assimilate it with the Agnikanya (Mamata) memento ," said Soubir Banerjee, a TMC functionary. tnn
