  • Security has been tightened in Kolkata as Holi celebrations and Ramadan’s second Friday prayers coincide tomorrow.

The Commissioner of Police has stressed on the importance of communal harmony in celebrating the events without hurting anyone’s sentiments. Police stations have received specific orders to exercise extra caution in communally sensitive areas, which will see deployment of additional forces.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Commissioner of Kolkata Police Manoj Verma said, “Holi and the Friday Namaz, both are important events. So, both communities should celebrate without disrespecting anyone or hurting anyone’s sentiments. Extra precautions are being taken and detailed arrangements are being made, keeping a lot of factors in mind. We are also keeping in mind the crisis in Bangladesh and recent events here. We are also closely watching political messages. All forces are on alert. All senior officials will be on the ground. We want everyone to enjoy their festival with ease and respect.”

A police official said that extensive meetings and internal discussions had been ongoing for a month to ensure smooth celebrations. Instructions have been issued to all district Superintendents of Police and Deputy Commissioners, too, emphasising the need for heightened vigilance during the weekend.

Other measures include thorough route inspections for processions, heightened vigilance at all police stations statewide, and increased patrol. Authorities are actively monitoring social media to curb misinformation and inflammatory content. Strict enforcement will target harassment, particularly against women and the elderly, as well as drunk and reckless driving, officials said.
