• 7 killed in collision between three e-rickshaws and SUV in West Bengal's Nadia

  • Image used for representative purpose only CHAPRA (NADIA): At least seven people, including two children and three women, died in a collision between three e-rickshaws (totos) and an SUV on the Krishnanagar-Karimpur State Highway in Lakshmigachha village, under the Chapra police station jurisdiction, on Friday morning. Ten others who were injured were taken to hospital.

    The deceased have been identified as Takrin Mallick (3),Santa Mandal (30) – from Teghri village, Nakashipara police station, Rahima Sheikh (35) – from Huda village, Chapra police station, Putul Mallick (26) – from Nakashipara, Amit Ghosh (35) – from Huda village, Chapra, Rohan Sheikh (16) – from Huda village, Chapra, Parveen Bibi (35) – from Huda village, Chapra

    According to local and police sources, the SUV was speeding from Krishnanagar when it collided with three totos coming from the opposite direction. Around 13 people sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Chapra Rural Hospital, where medical staff pronounced three dead on arrival. Four more later succumbed to their injuries.

    Driver fled, suspected of drunk driving

    Local residents alleged that the SUV driver was intoxicated, pointing to the discovery of an alcohol bottle inside the vehicle. The driver abandoned the car at the scene and fled. Police have launched a search to trace the driver.

    Hospital authorities warned that the death toll may rise further, given the severity of the injuries.

    Victims were shopping for Eid

    Sources said the victims were on their way to the local market for Eid shopping. The three e-rickshaws were travelling in succession when the SUV crashed into all three. Most of the casualties, including the Toto driver, were from the first vehicle, but passengers from the other two totos were also affected.

    Government compensation assured

    Chapra MLA (TMC) Rukbanoor Rahaman stated, "The victims will get the compensations what as usually is given for the victims of road accident."
