123 Kolkata: A day after a road rage incident on an uneven and scraped Salt Lake thoroughfare led to a death, Bidhannagar Police said they would be putting up advisories asking motorists in the township to be more cautious while driving inside the township as road repair work is underway.
Cops said they will put up temporary advisories on thoroughfares, issue cautionary messages on resident WhatsApp groups, and engage with block committee representatives to spread awareness, asking them to ride and drive very carefully in the interior lanes and by-lanes of the township where the road repair work is in progress.
With repaving work underway across several blocks, the interior roads of Salt Lake have become particularly hazardous, especially for bikers. The scraped surfaces pose a significant risk, increasing the chances of skidding and accidents. The police have urged all motorists to exercise caution while navigating these stretches.
"We are asking motorists to be extra careful while driving through these roads where the repair work is going on. Awareness drives have already started to ensure residents are informed about the risks, and we are urging all of them to be more cautious," said a senior Bidhannagar Police officer.
On Tuesday night, a road rage incident on a cratered Salt Lake thoroughfare between GD Island and FE Block led to the death of a young app biker.
Residents have welcomed the police initiative but also demanded faster completion of the roadwork. "The condition of the roads in Salt Lake has been terrible. Now the authorities have started the repair work, which has led to thoroughfares being scraped and dug up. The bikers are at the highest risk. The authorities must speed up the repairs," said Tarun Biswas, a GD Block resident.
TOI reported that road repair work commenced in various sections of First Avenue in Salt Lake and its adjacent blocks earlier this week. This marks the first substantial road restoration project in the area.
