123 Kolkata: A five-year-old girl, Riya Kumari, died when she accidentally rolled the accelerator of a toto parked outside her home that crashed into an electric pole in Baguiati on Thursday evening.
Riya, a resident of Narayantala in Baguiati, often used to play on the toto. On Thursday, the driver had forgotten to switch off the ignition and take the key out, said police. Once he left, Riya climbed on the vehicle and as she rolled the accelerator, the three-wheeler started moving and hit the electric pole.
"The child was severely injured in the accident. The impact shattered the vehicle's glass pane and broken glass pierced her neck," a senior officer of Bidhannagar commissionerate said. Riya's parents and locals rushed her to the nearest hospital where she was declared dead by an attending doctor.
