Kolkata: On the occasion of Nandigram Martyrs' Day on Friday, CM Mamata Banerjee reminded the people of Bengal of her govt's efforts towards the welfare of farmers.
The day is now celebrated in the state as Farmers' Day. Remembering those killed in police firing during the Nandigram agitation on March 14, 2007, Banerjee promised on X that her govt would continue to support farmers in the future. She also highlighted the state's ‘Bangla Shasya Bima' scheme. "On Farmers' Day, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the memory of the martyrs of the farmland protection movement in Nandigram, along with sincere greetings and congratulations to all farmer brothers and sisters and their families. Our farmers work tirelessly throughout the year to provide us with food. I salute their hard work — they are our pride," the CM posted.
"…Within our limited capacity, we try to do as much as possible for the farmers of Bengal. We have implemented the ‘Krishak Bandhu (New)' scheme, providing financial assistance, death-related support for working farmers, covering the full cost of crop insurance premiums, financial aid during natural disasters, purchasing rice from farmers at fair prices to prevent distress sales, offering farmer pensions, launching 186 ‘Kishan Mandis', and providing free agricultural machinery," she posted and added: "Since 2019, our govt has independently launched the Bangla Crop Insurance Scheme. In the coming days, our Ma-Mati-Manush govt will continue to stand by our farmer friends in this manner."
