Nandigram: A nine-year-old's presence of mind foiled the kidnap of her 4-year-old brother on Friday and led to the arrest of five accused. The girl's tutor is the main suspect. The boy was being taken away in a trolley bag when locals chased the accused, making him abandon the bag.
On the day of Holi, while the girl's parents were away, main accused Sanjay Pati entered her house in Shimulkundu, bound the boy up and put him in a bag. He tied up the girl as well but she continued screaming, alerting the neighbours who chased the accused. Pati abandoned the bag with the boy near Gholpukuria and fled.
Following the child's rescue, authorities launched a search operation and arrested Pati. During interrogation, four others were arrested for suspected involvement. Pati stated, "I had lent the child's father Rs 10,000, which he didn't return. I tried to kidnap the boy to ask for ransom."
